Origin
Blue Meanie is the only mushroom with “two identities”. One is a strain of Psilocybe cubensis. The other is the Panaeolus cyanescens species which is considered to be the “real” Blue Meanie. Panaeolus Cyanescens is believed to contain anywhere from two to three times the psilocybin compared to shrooms that are cubensis-based.
Inspired from the Beatles animated film Yellow Submarine. Blue Meanies have exploded in popularity and are one of the few strains you can commonly find in the psychedelic market.
Similar to Psilocybe cubensis, Panaeolus cyanescens can be found in many places over the world. It is a tropical/subtropical grassland species, typically found on cow or horse dung and occasionally on rich, grassy soils.
Blue meanies on their own usually pop up during the rainy seasons of the year when it's nice and humid.
Appearance
Cap
Blue Meanies typically have a bell-shaped to convex, sometimes flattening as they age. The caps can range from 1 to 4 cm in diameter and usually look pale greyish or brownish. The caps become lighter closer to white as they dry out. Blue Meanies are known to bruising blue when handled, which is a distinct feature and inspiration of its name.
Gills
There gills are initially light grey and they darken as they mature to black. Blue Meanies gills produce a jet-black spore print.
Stem
Blue Meanies are fibrous and brittle and can grow in the range of 7 to 12 cm in length and about 2-3 mm thick. The stems are commonly white, with patches of blue. The stems can also contain what many consider a strain-like blue appearance which come with being touched.
Potency
The primary active compounds responsible for their psychoactive effects are psilocybin and psilocin. Blue Meanies under Panaeolus cyanescens is known for being significantly more potent than many other psychedelic mushrooms. Depending on your source expect anywhere from 2 x 3 times the potency levels.
Effects
We find Blue meanies to be strong but not overwhelming. We would put this strain of mushroom in the above average category. This would include mild visuals, changes in perception of time, intensified emotions (depending on set and setting).
When consuming Blue Meanies we find also find it to be a really mellow, relaxing vibe that can put some of the most troubled sleepers into a deep slumber.
The effects usually onset within 20-60 minutes after ingestion and can last between 4 to 6 hours, with the peak experience typically occurring around 2-3 hours in.
Panaeolus cyanescens thrives in warm, humid environments. If you're interested in cultivating them, they require a nutrient-rich substrate, typically manure or compost, and controlled temperature and humidity environment.
Blue meanies are commonly propagated from spores. The spores are dark purple to black, a feature that helps in identification and spore printing.
